A hybrid electric vehicle or HEV is a type of electric vehicle that combines the advantages of both electric motors and gasoline engines. That is, the HEV has an electric motor as well as an internal combustion engine that runs on petrol or diesel. There are different types of HEVs based on the arrangement and working of the two motors. Modern HEVs are adopting newer technologies like regenerative braking; automatic shutdown and electric motor assist which greatly improve a car’s efficiency.
The biggest benefit offered by a HEV is higher fuel efficiency, almost twice as that of a conventional vehicle. Since these vehicles entail lower petrol consumption and reduced noise pollution, they are believed to have a positive impact on the environment. The benefits do not come cheap and HEVs are expensive as compared to their conventional counterparts. However, with advances in manufacturing technologies the price gap is expected to shrink over time.

We all know that petrol and diesel are non renewable sources of energy and at the rate at which they are being consumed you can be quite sure that after a while these will get over. That is why most people are considering alternative sources of power, sources which are renewable. One such alternative source of power is the solar power. Solar cells are used to produce electricity by converting sunlight. This process uses the photovoltaic effect. Cars powered by solar energy use this process to run.
These solar cells do not directly provide energy to the car’s motor. Instead it powers the car’s battery. This battery once charged runs the car. Although these cars have still not hit the mainstream market and are restricted to the niche consumers, they are gradually rising in popularity. In fact many car freaks have invested in solar cars.
